About Al & Duke
Just
after Al concluded a 1980 concert in Washington DC,
a stunning brunette with really wild hair made her way
to the stage and commented, "I'd love to sing background
for you sometime." Though he cannot recall exactly
why, Al replied, "Maybe we could sing together."
It was love at first sound, and since their marriage
in 1981, Al & Duke have been writing, recording,
and singing together ever since. With a unique style
of tight vocal harmonies, distinct chord progressions,
and intriguing lyrics, their music is enjoyed by
people of all ages and backgrounds.
"Music has always been a solace
for both of us," says Al. "Since our early
years, we found ourselves listening and writing. Our
music is constantly evolving, and that makes it a 'journey
in process.' After I became a Christian, I realized
there was a genuine opportunity to use music to make
a difference. It's amazing what a song will do."
Al and Duke's music generally falls
into two categories; the light, airy, storytelling ballad,
and then, the more contemporary 'Kansas-like' song,
with violin. "Yes," says Al, smiling, "the
writings of Kerry Livgren have been very influential
in my life. When he became a Christian, well, you can
only imagine what that did for me and many others." But regardless, music still has
to "have a message and come from the heart,"
says Al.
"I never had much luck sitting
down at the piano and predetermining that I would write
in a certain style. Most of our songs come as musical
ideas first, perhaps a verse, maybe a partial chorus.
I can usually tell fairly quickly what a song is doing
to my spirit, and I've tried to use that as a God-given
guide for writing and performing."
Interwoven into the fabric of their music, Al &
Duke express a deep interest in people of all cultures,
and they currently work with Ambassadors for Christ
International, which ministers in 36 countries.
During the mid-80's, Al & Duke spent four years
in Portugal where they used their music extensively.
They were one of several groups asked to perform at
the Luis Palau Crusade in Lisbon. From 1986-95 they
served with People of the World, using their music to
reach the multicultural community in Washington, DC.
As you listen to Al & Duke, you'll hear the special
effect from living among internationals: a touch of
calypso here . . . the beat of an African drum . . .
the strum of a Spanish guitar . . .
"Some have said that listening
to our music is like watching a movie. That's a wonderful
compliment. Though we want each song to stand on its
own and be musically appealing, we desire too, that
it evoke images and scenery, to reach into the spirit,
to minister in that regard. That's what brings the most
satisfaction."
Al & Duke have completed seven full-length recordings.
In Honor of the King features
a number of acoustic ballads, while A
Time to Believe offers a variety of styles ranging
from folk to pop. The Sequel
is richly orchestrated, and might best be described
as a blend of classical and pop with expressive lyrics
and unique harmonies. Underneath
the Same Sky thrust Al & Duke into the class
of true professionals, as this musical mosaic
contains songs with a personal touch, highlighted by
tremendous vocal arrangements.
Earth Visions is a musical
interpretation of spiritual journeys, and will keep
you spellbound for nearly an hour. In 2003, Al and Duke released Reformation, which chronicles the life and times of the great church reformer Martin Luther. Twenty-two selections in musical styles both new and old world will transport you to Germany’s Black Forest and into the heart of the fiery friar himself. Al and Duke have just released a new "best of" CD called the Master Collection: the Best of Al and Duke. The digitally remastered CD has 15 of your favorites, plus one new song Call on Me. Many of the songs have new arrangements that showcase Al and Duke's unique warm sound. Their daughter Jessy is an accomplished vocalist and sings with Al and Duke on their last three projects.
All of Al & Duke's
music will encourage your spirit, challenge your heart,
and remind you of God's promises.
